Review: Dinner at the University Club of WA

About Fussy

Like most people, I love eating and drinking. But I hate the bullshit most reviewers offer as standard fare.

You need to be a member to make a booking at the University Club of WA, but it is worth the effort and the modest fee.

I am a member of two clubs, The WA Club and the University Club of WA. I have dinner on Wednesday evenings at the university's Club Restaurant and Lounge Bar.

I don’t know about you, but there are a number of criteria I use to judge a dining experience. At an almost unconscious level, I have always found myself rating my dining experiences against them.

Using a 1-5 scale, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, my rating of the restaurant, one of two dining venues at the University Club of WA, is as follows:

  • Parking – 5
  • Fit out – 4
  • Atmosphere – 4
  • Speed of service – 3
  • Informed service – 4
  • Menu appeal – 3.5
  • Wine list - 4
  • Quality of food – 4
  • Price - 4
  • Overall experience – 4.5
  • The service was a little slow, despite the small number of people in the restaurant. Other than this, the staff clearly knew their product and bent over backwards to provide good service.

The menu was good, although I noted that the vegetarian offering had not changed in the best part of a year. That said, the thoughtful nature of the menu was great.

My friend had grilled fish, which she described as fantastic, while I had a souffle, which was beautiful. Both dishes, priced at around $30, came with a healthy serving of very tasty vegetables.

It was evening and I have access to member parking, so the parking was excellent. There was also plenty of parking for non-members.

The fit out and atmosphere is intimate and comfortable. It is warm and inviting. It works well in winter and summer, with a great outlook.

The wine list is extensive and of a high quality. The food is generally sensational at this club.

Overall, the experience is fantastic. I never hesitate to take business colleagues, friends and lovers to the University Club of Western Australia.

It is ideal for a business lunch with big tables, reasonably efficient service and light food options. It is also great for friends in the evening with its intimate atmosphere, great choice of music and comfort.

The only limitation is that you have to be a member of the club to make a booking. My recommendation is to join, or find a member who can take you along.

You will be very glad you did.

I am dining today at the WA Club and will report next week.
