TV shows your teens are probably watching

Teenagers are notoriously difficult to relate with. Being fresh out of my teens, I recognise how absent I was, and sometimes am, when I'm with my parents or others older than me.
Without further ado, here are some of the most popular shows among teenagers and maybe you can enjoy them, too!
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is the fourth-highest rated show on IMDB in history, highlighting its immense popularity.
With the seventh season kicking off to much hype last night, the synopsis of the series is as follows: “Nine noble families fight for control over the mythical lands of Westeros, while a forgotten race returns after being dormant for thousands of years.”
Brutal and bloody battles, shocking deaths, nudity, dragons, war and murder are never out of the question when it comes to Game of Thrones. With significant characters and great direction, it makes for a very entertaining series.
Rick and Morty
According to IMDB, Rick and Morty is the seventh-best show of all time, being the highest-rated cartoon as well. There have been two fully released seasons, with the third premiering later this month.
The synopsis of the series is as follows: “An animated series that follows the exploits of a super scientist and his not-so-bright grandson.”
It is rare to find such a crude, wacky and outlandish show that also provides emotional, heartfelt moments, and important commentaries on today’s society. What started as a parody of Back To The Future has grown immensely, making the show the cultural phenomenon what it is today. What makes it more impressive is that the same person voices almost half of the shows characters.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
This show may not be as highly ranked as the previous two, but it is a jack of all trades, with great comedy, as well as solid romantic and dramatic moments.
There are currently four seasons. The shows synopsis reads: “Jake Peralta, an immature but talented NYPD detective in Brooklyn's 99th Precinct, comes into immediate conflict with his new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Ray Holt.”
A great ensemble cast - including Andy Samberg, Terry Crews and Andre Braugher - deliver great comedic timing, which is to be expected from a Dan Goor and Michael Schur show (the two responsible for hit comedy The Office).
The Walking Dead
Based on a graphic novel series, there are currently seven seasons. The synopsis of the series reads as: “Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma, to learn the world is in ruins, and must lead a group of survivors to stay alive.”
A huge fanbase and beloved characters have helped launched the careers for stars such as John Bernthal, Steven Yeun and Danai Gurira.
Superhero shows
Superheroes are the theme of the moment in film, and it is quite similar with television. Marvel has the following shows:
- Agents of Shield
- Agent Carter
- Daredevil
- Luke Cage
- Jessica Jones
- Iron Fist
Several more are set to be released in the near future, including The Defenders, Cloak and Dagger, The Runaways, Inhumans and New Warriors.
Meanwhile, DC has released Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, with Black Lightening to be released soon.
Finally, we also have Legion on Fox, which is a highly regarded superhero series.
Anything on Netflix
Netflix plays host to a large amount of television and film content, some from other networks, and others as Netflix Originals.
The most popular recent Netflix Originals include 13 Reasons Why, The Get Down and House of Cards.
Nostalgia
Teenagers, despite their lack of age, are nostalgic beasts and will often find themselves watching a television show from a past era to remember, or see what the past was like.
This may include rewatching hit shows from their formative years such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, which can be enjoyed by all ages.
One of the best nostalgia shows is Freaks and Geeks, as it has many beloved stars in a breakthrough role for them, including James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr and Linda Cardellini.
