In defence of the Millennials

Why I disagree with the notion that we are 'incompetent'.

Recently, Philosophically Yours posted a story entitled “Why are so many young people incompetent?”

In today's technology driven era, there's no need to be able to blindly navigate 300km home.

I've got to admit, something about this post rubbed me the wrong way.

I agree that our younger generations have been bred to be softer around the edges, been more protected and have all received undeserved awards for participating in things.

But Philosophically Yours pointed out the increased rate of suicide as a weakness of the modern day teenager. However, the bullying faced by todays teenagers is far more ruthless than what it could have possibly been back in the day. Today's victims have no escape from their tormentors, due to the rise of social media.

It has been the changing media landscape that have led to the ‘incompetence’ of our youth. The fear-inducing journalism of today’s age has led to the overbearing, stricter parenting styles, corrupting the youth’s ability to adventure.

However, I sometimes wonder whether this is even important. Philosophically Yours believes that Millennials are unable to function effectively and efficiently in the world, and lack basic life skills. The world is changing and what we define as basic life skills is also changing.

No longer do we need to be able to navigate 300km, we need to be digitally competent to succeed in 2017 and for the future. With the rise of technology, digital competence is crucial and this is only going to grow in the future.

Augmented reality is going to lead to real-time navigational updates, with incredible amounts of input being processed at once. Therefore, the old-school life skills will be made redundant due to this revolutionary technology.

Do you have something to contribute to this debate? We'd love to hear from you!

Throughout university, we constantly have the importance of learning digital media being lectured because that’s what the future of business and the world will be.

I believe that it won’t be long until businesses operate not just in one place, but all around the world - with employees communicating to each other from their own homes. Meetings will be conducted by video chat, allowing people to work with colleagues on the other side of the world.

This is why we need to understand and embrace the ever-improving technology around us, as what was once a basic life style - such as navigating without technology - may become simply an outdated hobby.

In this regard, one could say that Millennials are not incompetent, in fact, quite the opposite. They are simply doing what humans do, adapting.
