Why Charlie Chaplin stands test of time

About James

I have lived a lot of years and the more years I have lived, the fewer answers i have found. I hope that by engaging here we can discover some answers together.

There's an old Charlie Chaplin movie with a message that is more than relevant today. Watch it here.

First screened in 1940 with clear references to Adolf Hitler, the movie The Great Dictator is as relevant today as it was 78 years ago.

Charlie Chaplin.

Charlie Chaplin

The speech at the end of the movie is certainly as powerful. It holds just as much sway as when the world found itself combatting the evils of fascism and nationalism.

Have you seen this before? If not, maybe you should. I certainly did not see it on release, but have viewed it since.

This clip, and the movie more broadly, don't just provide an insight into the acting and oration ability of the great Charlie Chaplin, but also the compassionate, thoughtful and political man that he was.

Famously banned from entry to the United States because he was considered a Communist sympathiser, British-born Chaplin inspired a generation with his movies and comedy -- and has inspired me in his final speech in the Great Dictator.

An interesting fact about Chaplin is that he once came third in a Charlie Chaplin lookalike competition.

Do you have a favourite quote, movie scene or moment featuring Chaplin? Please share!
