How to get fit in midlife after years of inactivity

About Justin

Sharing my thoughts and opinions with you

Getting fit in middle age is not as intimidating as you think ... in fact, it's fun! Read on.

As we age and our bodies slowly lose some of the capabilities that they once had, it's understandable to look back wistfully at the sports and athleticism enjoyed in our youth.

If this is you, especially if you've been inactive for some time (desk jockey, anyone?) don't worry. There are still ways to be able to have fun, rebuild that fitness and play sports as we age.

Obviously we have to be realistic with our expectations of ourselves. And realising that we are most likely past our peak athleticism is key to enjoying sports and exercise much more.

Once this has been accepted, it will be much easier to enjoy sports and exercise with lower expectations of your own performance. It is also important to note that 'detraining' occurs far more quickly than training, which means losing fitness occurs significantly quicker than the rebuild.

The best way to build up your fitness is quite possibly through an individual, low-impact activity -- such as regular walking and swimming -- which are great ways to build up your aerobic capacity.

But if you desire something more social, then golf and racquet sports such as tennis. squash, badminton and table tennis are also great options.

Cycling is fantastic because it is great for fitness building, while being far easier on your joints than running. Other great ideas to keep up your fitness levels in a fun and social environment are to join a dance or zumba class, perfect for a mixture of fun and fitness.

If you want to get fit and enjoy your sports and leisure more, then just get out there and do something!

There are even some fantastic apps for your phone to help you stick to your goals, packed full of tips, tricks and motivational ideas.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and use it before you lose it.
