Nine life-saving lessons to teach your grandkids

Here's how to equip your grandchildren with the tools to keep them safe from predators.

Sadly, the world we live in can be a dangerous one, so it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the children in our lives.

Children need to know it's OK to bite, kick and scream if grabbed by a stranger.

In that spirit, here's a list of potentially life-saving lessons that grandparents can teach their grandchildren -- with the parents' approval, of course.

These nine tips could prove themselves invaluable to children if they ever find themselves confronted by a predator.

Here's what you can teach them to help keep them safe:

  • No manners need to be shown if a stranger tries to take you. It's OK to scream, fight and make a scene.
  • If they are lost or feel unsafe and there are no police or other authorities around, look for a parent (with children) nearby.
  • If somebody tells them to keep a secret about body parts, they must be taught to tell you immediately.
  • Tell your grandchild that if someone in a car is following them, they must turn and run in the opposite direction, buying them valuable seconds while the car is turning around.
  • If grabbed, scream out for help  (eg: ''Help! I don't know this person!'') to ensure adults know that it's not just a child throwing a temper tantrum.
  • Teach them that adults don't need their help. Strangers needing help with directions or to find a lost dog etc should ask an adult.
  • Use a family codeword. If that codeword is used, respond immediately.
  • Teach them that police are mostly kind and trustworthy, not someone who locks them up for misbehaving.
  • Here's one for the parents. Don't allow personalised products on children (schoolbag nametags, etc). Children are more likely to be trusting of strangers if they ''know'' their name.
  • What other lessons or tips would you teach the children in your lives to ensure their safety?
