On This Day: March 16

About Justin

Sharing my thoughts and opinions with you

Traditionally, a lot of blood has been spilled on March 16. But it's not all bad news.

History shows that March 16 has been a far less jovial day than others -- with wars waged, kidnappings and more.

Despite this, there have been nuggets of hope, joy and positivity in sports, politics and engineering. This serves as an important reminder to us that no matter how bad some things are, there are still positives to be taken.

Here's what happened on this day throughout history:

  • English navigator Captain Mathew Flinders -- leader of the first circumnavigation of Australia -- was born (1774).
  • New York Stock Exchange records its slowest day ever, with just 31 shares traded (1830).
  • Hiriam R. Revels becomes the first African American to make an official speech  in the US Senate (1869).
  • The first FA Cup Final sees the Wanderers defeat Royal Engineers 1-0 at Kennington Oval in London (1872).
  • The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) is established (1949).
  • US soldiers massacre villagers in My Lai, Vietnam (1968).
  • The current London Bridge, the most recent of many, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II (1973).
  • Former Italian prime minister Aldo Moro was kidnapped at gunpoint by far-left terrorists the Red Brigades. He was murdered 55 days later when their ransom demands weren't met (1978).
  • The northern Iraq Kurdish city of Halabja is bombarded with chemical weapons, killing thousands of civilians, in an attack ordered by leader Saddam Hussein (1988).
