We’ve been spoilt for choice when it comes to great drama on our TV screens these past few years.

With streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime TV producing some fantastic original series’, it feels like a golden era of TV drama is upon us.

 But with so many great shows being made, it's possible that you may have missed a few. Here, in no particular order, are my top five shows that may have sliped under your radar.

1. Billions (IMDB – 8.4/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 83%)

Billions is a slick, modern drama set in New York City. It tells the story of hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damien Lewis), and US attorney Chuck Rhodes (Paul Giamatti), who is hell bent on proving Axelrod’s involvement in corrupt business dealings and insider trading.

Provocative from the word go and with many twists along the way, this is one drama you will be happy to get lost in.

In a classic tale of greed and corruption, peppered with sex and drugs, it gives a glimpse behind the curtain of how the other half live.

With a standout performance from Paul Giamatti and excellent writing, HBO have once again created a gripping, high-calibre drama that delivers far more than expected.

2. Sneaky Pete (IMDB – 8.3/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 100%)

Convicted con man Marius (Giovani Ribisi) leaves prison and assumes the identity of his cellmate, Pete.

Reuniting with Pete’s estranged family is a dangerous move, but no more dangerous than the world Marius is trying to escape.

With Marius constantly a whisker away from being exposed for the imposter he is, this show will have you on the edge of your seat.

Created by and starring Bryan Cranston (Walter White of Breaking Bad fame) -- who gives a fantastic performance as gangster and all-round bad guy Vince -- this show proves that Amazon studios has what it takes to deliver original top-end drama.

3. Taboo (IMDB – 8.6/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 75%)

James Delaney (Tom Hardy), believed dead, returns home from Africa in 1814 to inherit his father's shipping empire.

Thought to be a savage, Delaney is determined to build his shipping company into one that will rival the revered East India Company.

Making enemies almost everywhere he goes, Delaney must avoid death at the hands of his enemies while keeping his wits about him.

The BBC have a hit-and-miss history when it comes to drama, but this show is definitely a hit.

Despite being one of the grittiest but charming dramas I have watched in a long time, this show seems to have flown under the radar to some extent.

It is well worth following up, you won’t be disappointed.

4. Peaky Blinders (IMDB – 8.8/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 94%)

Another BBC production, Peaky Blinders tells the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and family, a notorious clan of small-time gangsters from Birmingham with big aspirations.

Set in the Birmingham of the 1920s, this show has a wonderfully dirty feel to it.

With superb casting and seamless performances from almost every actor involved, this show will leave you speechless.

If you haven’t seen this show already, you’re definitely missing out. Now moving into its fourth season, Peaky Blinders stands out as one of the biggest jewels in the BBC’s crown.

 

5. Mr Robot (IMDB – 8.6/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 95%)

I’m not going to lie to you, this show is as confusing as they come.

Rami Malek plays Elliott Alderson, the show's main character and unreliable narrator. He's a young emotionally damaged, anti-social computer hacker who gets involved with a plot to take down corporate America.

As someone with very limited knowledge of computer programming, much of this show's dialogue goes over my head. But keeping up with the complexity of the storyline is pretty rewarding.

With a cold, dark and mysterious feel to it, this show paints a picture of a financial apocalypse that is not only believable, but feels very close to being possible.

Another great production from Amazon Studios and a must-watch for Christian Slater fans.
