Three BIG reasons to get Netflix

About Tom Clark

I am passionate about TV and films...

These three original programs alone are a rock-solid reason to tune in to Netflix.

Streaming TV services are nothing new. In fact, Netflix was founded in 1997 and has offered a streaming service since 2007. What is new is the torrent of original programming being produced by Netflix and only available on their streaming platform.

Jason Bateman plays Marty Byrde in Netflix's Ozark.

If you were wondering what the benefits of streaming services like this were, other than the fact you can watch what you want when you want with no annoying adverts, then here’s three of the best Netflix originals for you.

1. Narcos  (IMDB - 8.9/10) (Rotten Tomatoes 87%)

Narcos is a hard-hitting drama which chronicles the cat-and-mouse game played by drug kingpins and the DEA in Colombia in the late 1980s.

Based on true events, the first two seasons focus on the rise and fall of the revered Pablo Escobar and his Medellin Cartel, thought to be the most violent, wealthy and ruthless organisation in the history of modern crime.

Fantastic performances from Boyd Holbrook (who plays DEA agent Steve Murphy) and Wagner Moura (who plays Pablo Escobar), along with an enthralling plot, make this show a must-watch.

Creators Chris Bernard, Chris Brancato and Doug Miro have delivered a masterpiece that's as dark and dangerous as they come, without destroying any historical integrity.

2. Ozark (IMDB – 8.4/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 64%)

Ozark tells the story of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a financial planner who, when a money laundering scheme goes south, promises Mexican drug lord Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales) that he will clean $500 million over five years to save his family.

With no idea of how he will achieve this, he relocates his family to a summer resort community in the Ozarks on a whim, with the hope of purchasing cash businesses through which he can clean Del Rio’s dirty money.

This show finds a superb balance between drama and comedy, and is fantastically well written. Jason Bateman shows us his serious side without losing his comedy roots, while a solid performance from Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde makes this show a joy to watch.

3. Master of None (IMDB – 8.4/10) (Rotten Tomatoes – 100%)

Created by comic Aziz Anzari with help from writer Alan Yang, this sitcom is loosely based on Anzari’s real life. It sees him play the role of Dev, an actor who is struggling with more than just finding work.

With subtle humour from the offset, this show won’t have you rolling on the floor with laughter, but will charm its way into your heart. Its witty observations of modern dating and loveable cast make this a high-brow comedy you won’t be disappointed by.

Having won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, this show has won the acclaim of critics and regular viewers, proving that Netflix has what it takes to make great comedy.

So there you have it, three great shows created and produced by Netflix for Netflix.

If you were unsure whether a subscription was worth the $9.99 a month price tag, hopefully this will convince you that you really are missing out by not having one.
