Plenty of major events have taken place on Valentine's Day throughout the years

Happy Valentine's Day everybody. Here's what went down on this day in history: 

Aretha Franklin & Whitney Houston.

Aretha Franklin & Whitney Houston

  • In New York City in 1849, James Knox Polk became the first serving US president to have his photograph taken (by Matthew Brady). 
  • In the 1929 St Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago, seven gangsters were killed, allegedly on Al Capone's orders.
  • The original Dracula film, starring Bela Lugosi as the titular vampire, was released in 1931.
  • Victor Fleming replaces George Cukor in 1939 as director of Gone With The Wind.
  • Senator John F. Kennedy appears on Meet the Press in 1954.
  • In 1962, US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy conducts a White House tour on TV. 
  • Respect, which becomes Billboard Song of the Year, is recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1967.
  • The movie Ben Hur is first shown on television in 1971.
  • Also in 1971, US president Richard Nixon installs a secret taping system in the White House.

    John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-host the Mike Douglas Show for and entire week in 1972.

    Whitney Houston's award-winning, self-titled debut album is released in 1985. 

    Best Picture-winning The Silence of the Lambs -- starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins -- is released in 1981.
