  • Uranus was discovered (1781).
  • Edmund Kennedy departs Parramatta to trace the course of the Barcoo River, hoping it will lead to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north (1847).
  • Ernest Giles departs Fowlers Bay on his third expedition to cross the western deserts (1875).
  • Composer Rudolph Friml's musical, Three Musketeers, premieres in NYC (1928).
  • Driving tests introduced in Great Britain (1935). 
  • US president John F. Kennedy sets up the Alliance for Progress (1961).
  • The third manned mission in the United States Apollo space program, Apollo 9, returns to Earth (1969).
  • Australian cricket legend Dennis Lillee takes 6-26, leaving England all-out 95 in the Centenary Test (1977).
  • The concept of the World Wide Web is proposed for the third time, and accepted (1989).
